FAQ

What makes Zealous Travel different?

Zealous travel adds a modern spin on small-group, outdoor adventures for the active, young professional. We simplify the complicated by curating the itinerary and handling the logistics, which saves you time for the important stuff. Our company believes in responsible travel while fostering meaningful connections through shared experiences in the outdoors.

What are the group sizes?

Our trips are optimally designed for 8-12 travelers. This is the perfect size group for our active outdoor pursuits, as well as getting to know each other throughout the trip. We carefully chose this group size with the safety of our travelers and guides in mind.

Is group adventure travel right for me?

Our trips are best suited for individuals seeking outdoor experiences in remote locations but aren’t comfortable with, or don’t have time to plan complicated logistics. Group adventure travel is ideal for people who enjoy connecting with others, appreciate the outdoors, and want to experience an epic adventure. Both international travel newbies and seasoned travelers join our trips!

Who comes on Zealous trips?

65% of our travelers sign-up solo, from California to New York and everywhere in-between. We’re independent and enjoy new experiences. We’re social and love meeting new people. We’re adventurous, but can kick back with a cocktail in-hand.

I'm new to backpacking, should I go?

Absolutely! Zealous travelers range from first-timers to experienced backpackers. If you lead an active lifestyle and love the outdoors, our trips are for you. At booking, you’ll be asked a few questions that will help guarantee the best trip ever. Leading up to your departure, we’ll provide a packing list, gear & clothing recommendations, fitness tips, and can answer any and all questions thrown our way. Our expert guides and trip leaders will make sure you feel safe and supported.

How do sleeping arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on double occupancy sleeping arrangements. You’ll be paired with a same-gender roommate who is likely to be just as awesome as you. Shared accommodations is the norm and part of the Zealous Travel experience. If you and a friend book together, you’ll be automatically assigned as roommates. If you book separately and want to room together, please let us know when making your reservation.

Can I room by myself?

Single occupancy is available for most trips for an additional fee. Because our hand-selected accommodations are usually on the smaller side, there are limited single options available. Please inquire as early as possible.

Can you accommodate food allergies or dietary restrictions?

Of course! We are happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. If you have other dietary restrictions, please inform us at the time of booking.

What fitness level is required?

Our priority is to keep travelers safe throughout the trip, especially during active endeavors. Our trips are geared towards individuals who are physically active and embrace challenges. Experience is certainly not a prerequisite. For multi-day hikes, most trips require the ability to comfortably carry up to 15-20 pounds in your pack for 4-6 hours, give or take. If you’d like some training tips, we encourage you to reach out to a friendly Zealous trip specialist in advance!

Do itineraries or activities ever change?

We do our best to adhere to planned itineraries but may be forced to make reasonable modifications when necessary due to the comfort or safety of our travelers. In addition, factors beyond our control (such as weather) may also be cause for changes to the itinerary or activities. Fortunately, change could make the adventure even more epic.

Who accompanies travelers on the trip?

Each trip will have 1-2 trip leaders who are part of the Zealous Travel team. Trip leaders handle logistics and ensure things run as smoothly as possible so that the trip is hassle-free and fun for everyone. Additionally, during activities that require specific expertise or technical skills, there will be a local certified guide from within the community. We feel strongly about partnering with local guides who are familiar with the weather, terrain, wildlife, and customs of the area. Supporting local is part of the experience.

What do I need to bring?

We provide a trip-specific gear list for your outdoor adventure, including required and recommended items. You’ll find the gear list on the description page for each trip. As part of our commitment to you, Zealous Travel includes personalized pre-departure support with our trip specialists. We are happy to help you find the right clothing and gear for your safety and comfort on the trail. Because blisters suck.

What is included?

The trip description page is the best place to find the itinerary and other trip-specific information. In general, the cost of the trip includes in-country transportation, lodging, most meals, activities, and a local certified guide during activities that require specific expertise or technical skills. Alcoholic beverages and personal expenses (i.e. laundry, SIM card) are not covered unless explicitly stated in the trip description.

What are the accommodations like?

In town, overnight lodging is typically in small, locally-owned accommodations. They will include all your standard, basic amenities and are equivalent to 2-3 stars. Sleeping accommodations and facilities on treks are found in the trip description.

What travel documents are required?

Passports are required for all trips and cannot expire within 6 months of the trip departure date. A visa may be required depending on the issuing country of your passport. It is the traveler's responsibility to understand requirements and obtain a travel visa if needed.

Will I have any free time?

Each trip itinerary builds in a sufficient amount of free time to rest, relax, or explore the town on your own or with fellow travelers. Our trip leaders are more than happy to offer suggestions on what to do and where to eat. We love supporting the local economy and eating all the ice cream!

Can I do part of the trip?

Trip prices are based on the full curated package as found in the trip description. Because our trips are designed to be completed from start to finish, we cannot accommodate individualized changes from the set itinerary. However, at your own expense, you are welcome to independently add extra days to the beginning or end of your trip.
